How to Overcome Depression: Bible Scriptures for Depression

Comments Off on How to Overcome Depression: Bible Scriptures for Depression

Depression is a debilitating mental illness. You can’t fulfill your God-given destiny if you’ve got depression hanging on to you. First, you’ll want to ask God for His wisdom concerning the situation because there may be some things you can do to help yourself.

In 1 Sam. 16:14 we see that an evil spirit filled Saul with depression and fear (NIV version) but it can also be be caused by things such as lack of sunshine, inadequate diet, hormone changes, genetics, etc.

For example a family member was experiencing major symptoms of depression that were alleviated when he switched from diet pop (soft drinks) to regular pop.

After you’ve done what you need to in the natural, start taking your medicine- the Word of God. Here is a list of scriptures to overcome depression:

Deuteronomy 31:8 (NIV) The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.

Psalm 25:20 O keep my soul (mind, emotions) and deliver me: let me not be ashamed; for I put my trust in thee.

Proverbs 16:3 Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.

Romans 15:13 Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.

Philippians 2: 5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus…

Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

2 Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Chipmunk Eating Berry Preview

I thought this cute, care-free chipmunk munching on berries was a good picture to go with this confession to overcome anxiety. I took a picture of a baby chipmunk eating berries on the shrubs in our front yard and created this digital painting.

If you want to overcome worry, you can buy this card at Zazzle for yourself or for a child. You can also write or print out this confession:

1I trust in the Lord with all my heart; I don’t lean to my own understanding. In all my ways I acknowledge Him, and He directs my paths.
2I never worry about anything; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving I let my requests be made known unto God. I am filled with the peace of God, which passes all understanding.
3I live a care-free life because I cast all my concerns on God; He cares for me.
4The Lord goes before me; He is with me, He does not fail me, nor forsake thee: I do not fear and I am not dismayed.

How to Overcome Anxiety: A Personal Testimony

One year around the holidays, I found myself feeling depressed and weighed down by problems. I wrote down everything that was bothering me, not just in my own life but in also in the lives of friends and family. I had 87 plus items on that list. It seemed like the more I prayed and tried to believe God, the longer my list grew. One day it dawned on me that I needed to meditate on the Word again. I had meditated in the past but somehow, meditating had been replaced with other things.

I decided to focus on Proverbs 3: 5-6. I started saying something along the lines of, “I trust in the Lord with all my heart; I don’t lean on my own understanding. In all my ways I acknowledge Him, and He directs my paths, He shows me what to do. I never worry about anything. I trust in the Lord concerning our finances, I trust in the Lord to help my husband make wise decisions, I trust in the Lord to help us get our van fixed. I trust in the Lord to take care of (name of family member) and put someone across his path to let him know that God loves him and has a good plan for his life…”

I did this for about an hour. I felt free and so much lighter. The problems were still there but I was no longer bothered by them. I kept doing this for the next several weeks and I noticed that everything worked out. Somehow all our bills got paid. We had money to buy Christmas gifts. Things that I had been worrying about were not even an issue.

If something is bothering you, instead of worrying about the situation, and letting it steal your joy, get some scriptures that apply to your situation, personalize them and start saying them. This will set you free and allow God to start working in your situation.

How to Stop Worrying: Meditation the Antidote to Worry

“How can I stop worrying?” is a question asked by many. We know we should not worry, but how can we get free from it’s grip? We know that anxiety does nothing to solve the problem, in fact, it can cause more problems. Studies show that worry can cause all kind of health issues ranging from depression to headaches to cancer.

Worry is a form of meditation- we are focusing on a problem rather than on something positive. One way to get free from worry is by switching our focus and meditating on the Word of God, rather than on the difficulty we’re facing. Here are some Bible verses to meditate on when you’re feeling anxious or “weighed down” by a problem:

Deuteronomy 31: 8 And the Lord, He it is that doth go before thee; He will be with thee, He will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.

Proverbs 3: 5-6 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Phillipians 4: 6-7 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Psalm 34:4 I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.
1 Peter 5:7 Casting all your care upon Him; for He careth for you.

John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
